MAGNOLIA — Jaxavian Holmes had 11 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns as the South Pike High School Eagles defeated the reeling Franklin County High School Bulldogs 20-0 Friday night.
Holmes scored on a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter and a 59-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Marc Varnado scored on a 5-yard run with 2:16 to go until halftime.
While South Pike’s offense was moving the ball at will and racking up first downs, Franklin County’s offense was, well, struggling to do anything right.
The Eagles ran for nearly 300 yards and finished with 17 first downs and 375 yards of total offense. Even though they lost two fumbles, the Bulldogs could not take advantage of them.
That’s because the Eagles’ defense was up to the task and then some. They held Franklin County to eight first downs and 147 total yards of offense. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they forced five turnovers – three fumbles and two interceptions.
Bernard Selmon had 21 carries but for only 65 yards. De’Mantre Collins completed just 3 of 7 passes for 16 yards with one interception.
Gregory Queen led the Bulldogs’ defense with 11 tackles while Deanthony King and Michael White had nine tackles each.
Franklin County (1-3) will be on the road again next Friday at 7 p.m. when it takes on Leake County.
