NATCHEZ — After a bumpy start to the season, the Trinity Episcopal Day School Saints are back on track as they won their third game in a row, defeating Prairie View 38-6.
The win pushes head coach Zach Rogel and the Saints above the .500 mark to 3-2.
“We came out and competed well,” Rogel said. “I’m pretty pleased with it. We’ve really stressed taking things one game at a time. We put the first two weeks behind us, and the last two wins behind us. We are trying to be the best every play we play, no matter what the score is and what our record is.”
The Saints were led by do-it-all sophomore quarterback Kevontaye Caston, who was involved in all of Trinity’s touchdown plays on the night.
“He looked good,” Rogel said. “We picked up our play calling, and in the first half, we were really good. He connected on most passes, and David Jackson and Cade Wells ran good, crisp routes. He put the ball on the money, and they caught it and did a good job with yards after catch.”
Trinity jumped out to an early 19-0 after the first quarter. Jackson reeled in an 18-yard pass from Caston to get the scoring started, then Caston found Wells from 45-yards out to push the lead to 13-0.
Jackson hauled in his second touchdown of the night, this time an 85-yarder from Caston.
Trinity’s success would continue in the second quarter. Wells would score his second receiving touchdown of the night, another 45-yard pass from Caston to increase the lead to 26-0. Then Caston would take over with his legs, scoring on runs of 30 and 58-yards to pull Trinity ahead 38-0.
Prairie View would eventually light up the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with a fumble recovery in the end zone, but the hole was too deep to dig out of.
Caston finished the night 9-13 for 240 yards in the air and four touchdowns, while also racking up 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.
Jackson led all receivers with 103 yards, with Wells a close second with 90 yards.
Next up for Trinity is a matchup with Bowling Green at home.
