Beau Pre Cup sets up dramatic finale today

NATCHEZ — After years in which one team had a nearly insurmountable lead over the other after the completion of Saturday’s matches, the 2014 version of the Beau Pré Cup Matches at Beau Pré Country Club has a chance to have a dramatic ending.

After Saturday afternoon’s foursomes (alternate shot) matches were over with, Team Carnoustie, captained by Tom Bryant, had 7 1/2 total points while Team St. Andrews, captained by Casey Ham, had 5 1/2 total points.

In the morning’s four-ball format, Team St. Andrews ended up with 4 points while Team Carnoustie finished with three points. And while there were some matches that ended well before reaching the 18th hole, there were some competitive matches as well.

Jordan Farmer and Bill Byrne of Team St. Andrews defeated Lloyd Trisler and Jeff Anderson of Team Carnoustie 1-up. Mark Carter and Matthew Hall of Team St. Andrews got past Kevin Smith Sr. and Keith Rayborn of Team Carnoustie, 2&1. And Tee Cotten and Al Conn of Team St. Andrews edged past Mel Beltzhoover and Jody Helbling of Team St. Andrews, 1-up.

The afternoon alternate shot matches went the way of Team Carnoustie, as it wound up with 4 1/2 points while Team St. Andrews managed just 2 1/2 points.

Two teams for Team Carnoustie that won their matches in the morning led the comeback for that team in the afternoon. The team of Jones and Cole Bradford defeated Smith Jr. and Hall, 6&4. The team of Punches and Lambert defeated the team of Fields and Cotten, 3&2.

Tee times for today’s singles matches will start at 11:30 a.m.
