Chatman racks up receiving touchdowns

NATCHEZ — Catching footballs is a lot like riding a bike for Trevon Chatman.
The former Natchez High School product and current senior wide receiver for Campbellsville University has already eclipsed his season total of five touchdown receptions last season. In his own subtle way, Chatman views his six touchdown receptions in three games as a nod to his ability to build upon last year’s success, picking up where he left off as if he were pedaling down the street.
“Of course it takes a lot of effort,” Chatman said. “But for me, once you learn it, it’s easy to get back into the flow of things. I’ve accepted my leadership role this season, and I’ve taken it upon myself to become the go-to guy.”
Chatman is only six touchdown receptions away from beating out Harold Small and Shane Riley for most receiving touchdowns in an individual season at Campbellsville. He has seven more games to do so, but if you ask Chatman, holding that record is only one goal of his. The ultimate goal is to win a championship.
“I’m not just focused on one record or another,” said Chatman, who recorded 40 receptions for 662 yards and eight touchdowns in 2010 as a Bulldog. “I don’t care about those records. I just want to win.”
When Chatman broke a 15-year old school record of 10 catches in a game against Lindsey Wilson in the season opener, he had no idea he broke it until after the game.
“It was just one of those things where I was just going along with what I was supposed to do in the game, and afterward, I found out what I accomplished,” Chatman said.
With the aid of transfer quarterback Jacob Russell at quarterback, Campbellsville University is airing it out twice as much as they did last year, giving Chatman twice the opportunity to catch passes and score touchdowns.
If Chatman continues to stay on pace, he will break every receiving record held by the school.
