The MHSAA Class 4A Greenwood High School Bulldogs had no mercy on Class 3A Wilkinson County High School as they defeated the Wildcats 62-19 Friday night.
“We turned the ball over a couple of times. They had an interception return for a touchdown and a punt return for a touchdown,” Wilkinson County head coach Kenneth Brown said. “We’ve got to play with a little more discipline. It’s the simple things that we’re trying to teach them.”
Brown said Greenwood (4-2) had some success running the ball and had a couple of big plays “here and there.” He also described the Bulldogs as a well-coached team that came into the game ready to play.
“They’re a good football team. They’re aggressive. I tip my hat off to them,” Brown said.
Greenwood lead 34-13 at halftime and didn’t let up in the second half.
The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 28-6 in the second half.
Despite losing by more than 40 points, Brown said that running back Lamar Jackson had a good game for the Wildcats.
“He ran the ball hard. He ran the ball with conviction. He didn’t turn the ball over,” Brown said. “He scored on a kickoff return. He showed good speed and toughness.”
Wilkinson County (2-4) next plays at Franklin County in the MHSAA Division 7-3A opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.
