Trojans hope for complete game Friday

FERRIDAY — Facing a winless West St. Mary squad Friday, Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings is more worried about fixing internal problems than game planning specifically.

“I don’t want to come off as cocky or anything, but if a team poses a threat to us, we want to make sure we’re correcting what we do so we won’t have any miscues,” Cummings said. “This week is more about us fixing those miscues and concentrating on us.”

Those miscues are what Cummings said cost the Trojans against Richwood in a 31-26 loss Friday night. Ferriday combatted a slow start — falling behind 13-0 in the second quarter — by scoring 26 straight unanswered points. However, late turnovers combined with missed tackles and missed assignments on defense led to a game-winning touchdown by Richwood with nine seconds remaining in the contest.

“We just couldn’t finish it at the end,” Cummings said. “We’re making sure that we’re getting better, and that we’re going to fix what we’re messing up on.”

Despite the loss, Ferriday running back Dontrell Domino continued to pile numbers with 300 total yards and two rushing touchdowns. Domino nearly broke a game-winning touchdown on a shovel pass, getting tripped up near Richwood’s 15-yard line. According to Domino’s numbers on Max Preps, the senior running back has tallied 712 rushing yards, 132 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns through four games.

“Domino continues to play well, but we have to play better together, and avoid coming out sluggish offensively, like we did last week,” Cummings said.

Cummings expects the Trojans to come out and execute, making up for previous mistakes against an 0-5 West St. Mary team that has been outscored 191-72 this season. With a win Friday night, Cummings’ Trojans would be 3-2 on the season, matching last season’s win total.
