CENTREVILLE — Chase Hughes scored three touchdowns and Austen Addington added two touchdowns as the Centreville Academy Tigers rolled to a 48-7 win against the Bowling Green School Buccaneers Friday night.
Centreville Academy, the top-ranked team in MAIS Class AA, improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in District 6-AA. A win at Central Private School next Friday will give the Tigers the outright district championship.
All three units were on top of their game for the Tigers and there was very little Bowling Green could do to stop them or even slow them down.
Hughes had four carries for 73 yards, including scoring runs of 33 yards late in the first quarter and 17 yards just past the midway mark of the second quarter. Casey Haygood completed seven of 11 passes for 142 yards. His 18-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Clark at the 3:36 mark of the second quarter and his 22-yard TD strike to David Carmichael with 1:03 left until halftime gave Centreville a 35-0 lead. Addington had a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:36 to go in the first quarter.
The Tigers finished with 309 yards of total offense and did not have to punt the ball at all.
“Offensively, we mixed it up early on,” said Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman. “Casey threw the ball well. We ran the ball well. And the line blocked well. The receivers caught the ball and we didn’t have any turnovers. We only had two penalties.”
The Tigers also had two special teams scores. Both Hughes and Addington had 89-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns in the second half.
Defensively, Centreville limited the Buccaneers to just three first downs and 71 yards of total offense. Not only that, Bowling Green had more punts (seven) than first downs.
“It was an all-around good effort. I was concerned about the players having a letdown after such an emotional win over Silliman,” Stutzman said. “But the seniors did a good job. We didn’t take Bowling Green lightly. We took care of business.”
Kickoff for Centreville’s game at Central Private next Friday is at 7 p.m.
