NATCHEZ — Copiah Lincoln Community College Natchez student David Davis longs to help others do better than he has.

Davis, 20, was awarded September student of the month.

The student of the month is an honor awarded by Co-Lin, which recognizes an outstanding student each month. It is an appreciation of the student’s various contributions to student life at the college.

However, Davis is a natural leader who rules with a quiet demeanor, Co-Lin officials said.

“David’s quiet and steadfast leadership style is a pleasure to work with during campus activities,” said Co-Lin Natchez Vice President Teresa Busby.

Davis is not quiet because he is shy, but because he is a straightforward person.

“I like to be straight to the point when working at school,” Davis said. “I learned that you can get a lot more done by being calm.”

Davis does not see himself as a leader, but as a student who simply wants others to succeed.

“I want to see people succeed, I want to see people happy and I want people to do better than me,” Davis said.

Davis thinks everyone has the potential to be successful, but only if they see it in themselves.

“My mother taught me to be the best that I can be,” Davis said. “I want to be better, but I also want people close to me to succeed because I want to be happy for them.”

Davis is not the type of leader to drag others down, but build them up.

“I like the people here at Co-Lin,” Davis said. “They helped build me up, and hopefully, I can do the same for some of the students here.”

Davis looks to graduate from Co-Lin Natchez in December.

Although Davis is still undecided on his major, he has decided that he wants to help others.

“I’m thinking about psychology at the moment,” Davis said. “I want to know what people are thinking.”

Davis said he owes his success and can-do attitude to his parents.

Co-Lin Natchez director of public information Nancy McFarland said Davis is a conscientious student who goes above and beyond in his studies and campus activities.

Davis is an active member in Co-Lin’s N-Sights, Film Club and SOAR (Students Obtaining Academic Rewards) program.
