Two unbeaten teams will clash in Devereaux Stadium tonight when Cathedral welcomes MAIS AAA powerhouse Oak Forest Academy.
The (7-0) Green Wave have won their last two home games by two total points against two of the top teams in MHSAA Class A. Even with Resurrection and Lumberton behind them, head coach Ron Rushing said the Green Wave’s schedule is about to get tougher.
“I think they may be the best team we’ve played in the six years that I’ve been here,” Rushing said.
Oak Forest Academy is 8-0 on the season, scoring 40 points per game and giving up only six. The Yellowjackets are averaging 364 rushing yards per game led by Kaylin Stewart’s 1,012 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per carry. Collin Kent has 358 rushing yards, averaging 8.3 yards per carry, while quarterback Tyler Hasson has 760 rushing yards, averaging 12.9 per rush.
“They’re real physical,” Rushing said. “Those running backs are shifty, hard to bring down. The quarterback runs the ball well, exceptionally well. They run the ball a lot more than they throw it.”
Cathedral has ran the ball more than they’ve passed it in 2014, relying on an option-based offense with two running backs. Rushing said he would like to pass more against Oak Forest to offer a more balanced attack.
Rushing said stacking his schedule was by design, and that he’s not worried about his record as long as the season prepares his team for the postseason.
“I think you get better when you play better competition,” Rushing said. “I’m excited about it.”
