LIBERTY — The Centreville Academy Tigers jumped out to a 30-0 lead and never looked back as the top-ranked team in MAIS Class AA defeated the Amite School Center Rebels 56-14 Friday night.
“We came out and (forced) an early turnover and we scored quickly. That set the tone (for the game),” Centreville assistant coach Brian Stutzman said.
Special teams also played a pivotal role in this rivalry game as the Tigers scored a touchdown on a kickoff return and a punt return.
Even though Amite School Center (5-4) scored a touchdown late in the first half, the Rebels still trailed the Tigers at halftime, 37-8.
“We threw the ball well. Defense played well. It was a pretty solid performance from all phases,” Stutzman said.
Centreville Academy (9-0) will have its hands full next Friday night when it plays host to one of the top teams in Class AAA in the still-undefeated Oak Forest Academy Yellowjackets. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Oak Forest used a big fourth quarter to rally for a 44-27 win on the road against the Cathedral Green Wave, the No. 1 ranked team in MHSAA Class 1A.
