After an inexplicable turnover by Centreville Academy with 29 seconds to play, Oak Forest Academy scored on a 33-yard pass on a reverse from Kaylin Stewart to Randy Ballard just seconds later as the Yellowjackets defeated the Tigers 35-29 Friday night.

Chase Hughes intercepted a Tyler Hasson pass with just 57 seconds left, giving Centreville the ball with the Tigers holding a 29-27 lead. Oak Forest had just one timeout left — at least that’s what assistant coach Brian Stutzman said the scoreboard had, which would have meant the Yellow Jackets would not be able to get the ball back.

However, Oak Forest was allowed to call three timeouts.

“We had to get a first down,” Stutzman said. “We fumbled and they recovered. They ran a trick play and beat us.”

Because of that, Centreville ran the ball and that proved to be costly. Ian Ball fumbled the ball and Oak Forest recovered it, giving the Yellow Jackets an unexpected opportunity to win the game. But after Oak Forest took the lead, the game was not quite over.

Hughes returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oak Forest 15-yard line, but Casey Haygood’s last pass of the game was intercepted in the end zone.

“We had our chances to put the game away. We had a kickoff return called back. We dropped a touchdown pass. We just came out on the short end of the stick,” Stutzman said.

The game between Oak Forest and Centreville lived up to the hype between two undefeated teams. While both Haygood and Yellow Jackets quarterback Tyler Hasson threw three interceptions, Haygood also threw three touchdown passes and finished 12-for-27 for 135 yards. Hasson, on the other hand, had one touchdown run and one touchdown pass.
