NATCHEZ — Halloween nights across the pond are just not the same as those in Natchez for Lisa Miller and Margaux Trappey.
Miller and Trappey grew up in England and said Halloween has a special meaning for them as adults because they did not have to luxury of growing up around the holiday.
One way they have embraced Halloween is through makeup.
When The Dart landed on Union Street in Natchez, Miller was just getting started on Trappey’s porcelain doll costume after doing her own ghoulish makeup.
There is Halloween in England, but Miller and Trappey both describe it as more backward than driving on the other side of the road.
“As a kid, we never trick-or-treated,” Miller said. “People give out money instead of candy. It’s not very popular.”
Trappey mirrored Miller’s sentiment.
“I got pennies once,” she said. “People don’t have candy, but feel like they should give you something, so they give you change.”
“It is not a big deal there at all.”
The atmosphere left Miller wanting more out of Halloween.
“I always wanted to go all out with the costume and makeup,” she said.
“Now we embrace it like crazy,” Trappey said.
Miller’s love for makeup began when she was young.
“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve found myself stuck in my room experimenting with makeup,” she said.
Now during Halloween, she is able to unleash her artistic side when helping friends get made up.
She uses online videos and the television show “American Horror Story” as her inspiration for Halloween costumes.
“It is a great way to express your creativity,” Miller said.
