JONESVILLE — The Block High School Bears did not let a sluggish first quarter get to them as they ended up defeating the overmatched North Central High School Hurricanes 42-0 Friday night in the first round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.
“It was slow. The atmosphere wasn’t good. Some people didn’t show up for the game. We didn’t come out with that fire,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “It wasn’t an up-tempo game.”
Block, the No. 11 seed, was without fullback Kendrick Curry and Vault elected not to start Raymond Plummer at running back. Even quarterback Vyn’quez O’steen got banged up during the game and ended up throwing just three passes in the game.
So the Bears went to the running game and Shavarick Williams stepped up big time with nearly 160 yards and two touchdowns. Even though they went up 28-0 at halftime, Vault said after the game there were a few things on offense he was not pleased with and that will be worked on this week in practice.
“Taylor (Perron-Krause) had a couple of big runs, but he also fumbled the ball going into the end zone. Defensively, we let them touch the ball too much on passing plays early on,” Vault noted.
Williams wasn’t the only Block player who came through in this game. Dorian Bowman returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and had a 35-yard touchdown reception.
North Central, which somehow got in as the No. 22 seed despite a 1-9 overall record, just couldn’t get any long drives going to keep Block’s offense on the sidelines.
Block (6-5) will hit the road next Friday for a second-round game against No. 6 seed Plain Dealing. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
