NATCHEZ — The body of a man missing since Sunday night was found Wednesday a half-mile from the nearest road in the woods near Natchez State Park.
Travis Todd, 35, had entered the wooded area Sunday in an apparent plan to spend the afternoon exploring. He’d made plans with his wife for later in the evening, and had left without his cell phone.
A family friend said Tuesday Todd may have been in a confused state at the time of his disappearance because of an injury he had suffered from receiving a strong electrical shock in 2012. He had also left without medication.
Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said Todd’s body was located on top of a hill near a creek at approximately noon, and was recovered from the area — which included rough terrain — around 2:30 p.m.
A team from Madison County Search and Rescue —which had been called into the park area by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks — found Todd’s body, Mayfield said.
Adams County Coroner James Lee said Todd’s body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy, and he hopes to get results by the end of the week.
Lee said he could not determine an exact time of death, but “the body was consistent with someone who had been missing since Sunday.”
“We can probably exclude any kind of blunt trauma at this time, unless the autopsy reveals something,” Lee said. “The temperatures have been dropping at night, so hypothermia is being considered, but we will know more once the autopsy comes back.”
Mayfield said investigators did not suspect foul play and any further investigation is pending the results of the autopsy.
“(Todd) had left during the rain, and he had no wet weather gear or anything like that, and he had a lighter on him, but there was no sign he tried to make a fire,” Mayfield said.
“Our sympathy goes out to the family and thanks go out to all the people who helped. You don’t want this outcome, but sometimes it happens.”
Those involved in the search included Adams County Civil Defense, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and members of the state search and rescue team, including the Madison County representatives.
A friend who had acted as a spokesperson for the Todd family could not be reached Wednesday afternoon, and family members declined to comment at the time.
