PLAIN DEALING, La. — The Block High School Bears saw their season come to an end Friday night in a 16-6 loss to the Louisiana New Tech Lions in the second round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.
All of the scoring took place in the fourth quarter after the two teams couldn’t get anything done offensively through the first three quarters.
“We didn’t move the ball well. They didn’t move the ball well,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “Both defenses played really well.”
A Block fumble at midfield was picked up by the Lions and returned for a touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, Louisiana New Tech went up 8-0. Then later on in the fourth quarter, Vyn’Quez O’Steen threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Bowman. However, the Bears’ two-point conversion was no good, leaving them trailing 8-6.
The Lions scored with about three minutes left on a screen pass that turned into a 60-yard touchdown. They were successful on the two-point conversion again to go up by 10 points.
“The fumble they returned for a touchdown gave them the momentum. They’re a good team, though,” Vault said.
Block, the No. 11 seed, finished with an overall record of 6-6. Louisiana New Tech, the No. 6 seed, improved to 9-2 and will take on the winner of the Varnado-West St. John winner Friday night in the quarterfinals.
