NATCHEZ — A local woman died on Liberty Road early Sunday morning after she was ejected from the vehicle in which she was a passenger.
An Adams County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident near 1111 Liberty Road at approximately 1:15 a.m.
The other occupant of the 1998 Dodge Caravan, David Campbell, told deputies he was driving the vehicle when it crashed into the bridge near that location, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson did not disclose why the vehicle crashed into the bridge.
Adams County Coroner James Lee said the passenger of the vehicle, Mary Heathcoate, 53, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Heathcoate was ejected from the vehicle and sustained severe head injuries during the accident, Lee said.
“That was one of the worst wrecks I have seen in a long time,” Lee said. “It was very sad.”
Campbell was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The ACSO spokesperson said the incident is still under investigation.
