FERRIDAY — Shannon Morales will be suiting up in black and yellow again next football season. In 2015, Morales will be playing for Grambling State University, in place of his beloved Ferriday Trojans.
Morales, who was being recruited by the Tigers this season, received a phone call Sunday from a member of Grambling’s coaching staff, who extended an offer. Morales, then, verbally committed to play at the university on a full scholarship.
“I’m excited because I wanted to play football for anybody who would give me a chance,” said the Ferriday senior.
Morales, who was Ferriday’s cornerstone on defense, moved to quarterback in the middle of the season, and had a productive season for the Trojans at the position. Morales threw for 892 yards and nine touchdowns for the Trojans in 2014, all the while collecting 539 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Morales also totaled 79 tackles on defense, two tackles shy of team-leader Marquis Brown.
Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings said from the beginning the sky was the limit for Morales and the other seniors in this class.
“From a coaching standpoint, I’m happy schools are taking high interest in our kids,” Cummings said. “Shannon has put in the work, as wells as our other seniors.”
Morales will join his sister Consuela Morales at the university, and though Morales would like to play quarterback for the Tigers next season, he said he’s not sure which side of the ball he’ll end up on.
“I would like to play quarterback, but I’ll play wherever they put me,” Morales said.
Morales and the Trojans went 6-5 in 2014.
