VIDALIA — One lane of the eastbound Mississippi River bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday starting today through the end of the month.

The closure is necessary to allow work crews to install cable that will eventually connect the City of Vidalia to ultra-high speed Internet.

The installation of the cable is expected to take six to eight weeks with a portion of that time impacting traffic on the bridge.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation does not usually allow the running of utilities on structures it controls, but Vidalia was granted an exception because the city was able to demonstrate alternate routes were not an option.

When fully installed, the fiber optic will be a part of a citywide network that officials have said will deliver 1-gigabit per second Internet service to businesses, industry and eventually homes in the area.
