NATCHEZ — A Natchez resident is warning others in the area about a telephone scam.
Betty Parker said she received a call Thursday from someone claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The caller left a message on Parker’s machine after she didn’t answer the call stating that they had been trying to reach her several times, but that Thursday’s call was the final notice before the IRS would be filing a lawsuit against her.
“I can imagine that if I would have answered they would have told me they could take a payment over the phone and wipe out the lawsuit,” Parker said. “I know I don’t owe anything to the IRS so I know this wasn’t real, but I’m concerned about someone else who might actually think this is true.”
Parker said she’s passed the information on to representatives with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, but wanted to let more local residents of the potential scam.
“It seems like around the holiday times we start seeing more and more of these,” Parker said. “People just need to know this is going on.”
