Concordia Council of Aging provides 300 gifts

VIDALIA — Concordia Council of Aging director Dorothy McDonald considered the organization’s Christmas Party on the first week of December a tremendous success, thanks to several volunteers and donations.

Through the help of others, and donated door prizes by different businesses and individuals in the parish, the Concordia Council of Aging provided more than 300 presents for the elderly in the parish.

“We had gifts for all the seniors, with each receiving a gift bag of fruit goodies as well,” McDonald said.

But even though McDonald considers the holiday season a success already, she knows it’s only the beginning for the giving season.

That’s why McDonald is asking those in the community to continue to support the organization that’s been around since 1968.

Though the organization predominantly offers it’s services in the form of “meal on wheels” — distributing around 75 hot meals a day in Vidalia and Ferriday as well as delivering five frozen meals to 350 people — the Concordia Council of Aging still feeds 30 to 40 individuals at the center each day.

“We can always use supplies at our sites in Vidalia and Ferriday,” McDonald said. “Toilet paper, towels, napkins, of course, volunteers to help served are always welcomed.”

Accessories, services and food, particularly nonperishable cans of food, are certainly needs that are encouraged by McDonald to fill.

But the organization has another that might not cost someone anything but time.

“We actually have entertainment sometimes for those who come by,” McDonald said. “Various organizations will come by and entertain, but volunteers who would like to come by and do so most certainly can.”

McDonald said she is appreciative of all the love and support the community has shown the organization throughout the years, and is confident the Miss-Lou will continue to do so for years to come.

“Donations always help because funds are cut nationally and statewide from time to time,” McDonald said. “Without our parish, we would not be able to do the things we do.”

For monetary donations, make checks payable to the Concordia Council on Aging, 405 Carter St., Vidalia, LA 71373.

Supplies can be donated to the main office or to the meal site location in Vidalia, 411 Texas St., and Ferriday, 111 Texas Ave.
