NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School head coach Richy Spears was hoping his Rebels would come out with the same amount of effort and intensity against the Amite School Rebels on Friday night that they did in their impressive win over University Academy of Cenla just 24 hours earlier.

Even though that would not be the case on the offensive end, ACCS still led Amite School Center 19-10 after one quarter of play and went on to take a 69-38 win over the visiting Rebels from Liberty to remain undefeated in MAIS District 5-AA.

“It wasn’t how I was hoping we would come out,” Spears said. “We came out sluggish. That was kind of frustrating. We’re always glad to get a win.”

ACCS picked up the pressure in the second quarter and held Amite School Center to just six points en route to a 33-16 halftime advantage. The host Rebels put the game out of reach by putting up 23 points while limiting the opposition to only 11 points for a commanding 56-27 lead.

“I was pleased with effort on defense,” Spears said. “I preach defense. We had some breakdowns. I’m just a defensive-minded coach.”

Brandon Brooks and Trey Fleming led ACCS with 10 points each while Brody Cole and Sneh Patel added nine points apiece. With some players perhaps feeling the affects of Thursday night’s game and Spears decided to go to his bench early.

ACCS (16-2, 5-0) hosts Brookhaven Academy next Tuesday night.

Ferriday 67, Winnfield 38

FERRIDAY — Ronald Williams led a balanced scoring attack for Ferriday High School with 11 points as the Trojans overcame a slow start to defeat the Winnfield High School Tigers 67-38 in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Friday night.

Kerry Brooks, Jashon Foster, Zandarius Rosenthal, and Dantrieze Scott all had 10 points for Ferriday. The Trojans actually trailed Winnfield 11-7 after one quarter of play, but a 20-11 advantage in the second quarter turned the game around.

Ferriday (9-10, 2-1) next plays at Oak Grove Tuesday night.

Northwood-Lena 80, Block 58

JONESVILLE — Ray Plummer led Block High School with a game-high 27 points, but the Bears did not have enough offensive firepower to stay with Northwood-Lena as the Gators rolled to an 80-58 win to remain undefeated in LHSAA District 3-1A.

Northwood-Lena ended up with five players scoring in double figures, led by Michael Layssard with 25 points.

“Ray played a good game. Their big kid, Layssard, is 6-9. Ray did a good job of controlling his body and taking it to him in the second half,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said.

Block (10-8, 1-2) will look to get back to its winning ways Tuesday night at Montgomery.

Trinity Episcopal 57, WCCA 22

WOODVILLE — Demond Fleming led Trinity Episcopal with 15 points and Kevontaye Caston added 14 points as the Saints defeated the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams 57-22 Friday night in an MAIS District 7-A game.

Jakarius Caston finished with 12 points for the Saints, who jumped out to a 16-5 lead over WCCA after one quarter of play and never looked back. Trinity allowed just two points in both the third and fourth quarters.

“We played 2-3 zone all game. We created a lot of turnovers and got a lot of transition baskets,” Saints head coach Zach Rogel said. “Everybody stepped up and did their jobs. They had active hands. Defense is what won us the ball game.”

Colton Nettles led WCCA with 12 points and Caleb Poole had six points.

Trinity Episcopal (6-5, 2-1) next plays Tuesday night at Franklin Academy.

Centreville Academy 73,

Central Private 55

CENTREVILLE — John Gray scored 18 points and Austin Addington had 14 points to lead five Centreville Academy players in double figures as the Tigers cruised to a 73-55 win over the Central Private School Rebels in MAIS District 6-AA action.

Centreville came out focused and ready to play while Central Private seemed to be confused in the first quarter, which ended with the Tigers leading the Rebels 20-5.

“We’re starting to defend a little bit better,” Centreville head coach Ricky Gray said. “We’re real athletic. Over the next two weeks, hopefully we’ll be able to play four solid quarters like we played the first quarter.”

Centreville Academy (7-7, 4-3) doesn’t play again until Friday night when it hosts Silliman Institute.

Jefferson County 78, Crystal Springs 72 (OT)

FAYETTE — Christian Day led all scorers with 32 points and Akeem Williams added 12 points as the Jefferson County High School Tigers needed overtime to defeat the Crystal Springs High School Tigers 78-72 in an MHSAA Division 7-3A game Friday night.

What was amazing was how the game even ended going to overtime. Jefferson County trailed Crystal Springs 16-14 after one quarter of play, 38-32 at halftime, and 51-44 at the end of the third quarter.

Then Jefferson County turned up the intensity and pressure in the fourth quarter and outscored Crystal Springs 19-12 in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 63-63. Then the host Tigers proceeded to outscore the visiting Tigers 15-9 in the extra period.

Rashard Brown finished with 10 points and Josh Day added nine points for the home team.

Jefferson County (N/A, 1-1) next plays at Hazlehurst Tuesday night.

Wilkinson County 74, Franklin County 64

WOODVILLE — Travion Jones led Wilkinson County High School with a game-high 39 points as the Wildcats upset the Franklin County High School Bulldogs 74-64 Friday night in an MHSAA Division 7-3A game.

The first half proved to be the difference in this game as Wilkinson County outscored Franklin County 11-7 in the first quarter and 18-13 in the second quarter for a 29-20 halftime lead.

Even though the Bulldogs picked it up offensively in the second half, they still could not slow down the Wildcats. LaHendrix Bruster and JaQurious Stewart added 10 points each for Wilkinson County.

Franklin County was led by Tri’Anthony Hunt with 21 points while Vincent Griggs Jr. had 12 points and James Davis poured in 10 points.

Wilkinson County next plays at Crystal Springs Tuesday. Franklin County plays at Wesson next Tuesday.
