FERRIDAY — Delta Charter hired one of its own to fill the role of head football coach, naming Dewayne Taylor Tuesday night.
Taylor, who coached the Storm’s basketball team to a 21-4 record, replaces Josh Loy who coached the Storm last season and resigned in the fall. Taylor is looking forward to the opportunity of wearing multiple hats with Delta Charter.
“This is the best day of my professional life,” Taylor said. “It’s crazy. I’ve been playing football since I was 7, and though I stopped playing basketball in high school, I went on to play at Alcorn State. So football was always my first love.”
Now that he’s the new head coach, Taylor said he’s going to get to work sooner than later, setting up conditioning next week and meeting with the players and the parents as soon as possible.
Though the school still hasn’t received official confirmation as to whether or not its LHSAA application was approved, Taylor had plans of working on his schedule, along with scheduling a busy offseason.
“We know for sure that we’ll be going to 7-on-7 camps, and I’ve been in contact with coaches in the area, letting them know I wanted to schedule some 7-on-7 games here,” Taylor said. “It’s going to be busy, but we’re going to get the kids all the exposure we can.”
As for coaching multiple sports, Taylor said he’s just going to embrace it, and try to replicate the same type of success Benny Vault does at Block High School.
“I’ve coached multiple sports before, even at Natchez High when I coached middle school track and was a defensive backs coach,” Taylor said. “I was the offensive coordinator and head basketball coach at St. Helena before coming here, so it’s nothing new. I just look at somebody like Benny, and try to model myself after a guy that has had that much success.”
