NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School Rebels capped off an undefeated regular-season run in MAIS District 5-AA with an impressive 61-32 win over the Prentiss Christian School Saints Tuesday night.
Jay Fleming led ACCS with 11 points while Brandon Brooks and Jordan Arnold added eight points each. Tyler Stockstill and Trey Fleming contributed with six points apiece for the Rebels, who will be the No. 1 seed in the district tournament a week and a half from now.
“It was a fun night. I have seven seniors, and I let five of them start. I thought it was a good night for the seniors,” Rebels head coach Richy Spears said.
Spears added that all of the seniors were getting to loose balls and making shots when they had opportunities. And they had plenty of those because of the way the Rebels were passing the ball to find open teammates.
ACCS dominated Prentiss Christian on both ends of the court in the first half. The Rebels led the Saints 25-8 after one quarter of play and 43-16 at halftime.
The only consistency the Saints had was that they scored eight points in all four quarters and their only player to score in double figures was Peyton Duncan with a game-high 15 points.
“Defensive-wise, we were getting rebounds. We were moving the ball, finding the open person,” Spears said.
“To go undefeated in district, I was pleased.”
ACCS (19-3, 8-0) next plays on Monday when it hosts Copiah Academy.
Cathedral 65, MSD 44
JACKSON — With James Alan Coley still out with an ankle injury and R.J. Givens still ill, Cathedral High School head coach Peter Arnold went with a different lineup Tuesday night against MHSAA Division 7-1A opponent Mississippi School for the Deaf.
The strategy turned out to be a good one as the Green Wave scored 28 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 65-44 win over the Bulldogs. So did using a couple of different defenses that led to several fast-break opportunities — especially in the first half.
“We were really small tonight. We had four guards and Wyatt Boothe out there,” Arnold said. “We played aggressive 1-2-2 full-court press and a 1-3-1 half-court trap. Just got a lot of steals and easy transition baskets.”
Cathedral jumped out to a 28-13 lead by the end of the first quarter and Arnold said his team had already put up 40 points with four minutes to go until halftime. With the game out of reach, he put his reserves in and they got some much-needed playing time.
“Just got off to a fast start. Got a big lead,” Arnold said about the big first quarter. “We got everybody a lot of playing minutes. Everybody who dressed scored.”
Boothe led the Green Wave with 11 points while Conner Mire had nine points and William Doss chipped in with eight points. The Bulldogs were led by Jerome Smith with a game-high 14 points.
Cathedral (5-8, 4-2) will be on the road again Friday night when it plays at Pelahatchie.
Vidalia 49, Buckeye 35
BUCKEYE, La. — Vidalia High’s Julius Wilson did not score a single point and it still did not matter as the Vikings pulled away in the second half for a 49-35 win over the Buckeye High School Panthers Tuesday night in LHSAA District 3-3A action.
Vidalia’s defense was a key factor in the ball game. The Vikings held Buckeye to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters. With Demarco Brown, Overton Lewis and Malik Jefferson leading the way, Vidalia outscored the Panthers 14-8 in the third quarter and 10-3 in the fourth quarter.
Brown led all scorers with 18 points while Lewis added 15 points and Jefferson poured in 10 points.
Vidalia (11-9, 2-2) plays host to Caldwell Parish Friday night.
Ferriday 51, Sterlington 48
STERLINGTON, La. — In a game that was much closer than Ferriday High School head coach K.G. Watkins expected it to be, the Trojans held on for a 51-48 win over the Sterlington High School Panthers in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Tuesday night.
Dantrieze Scott led Ferriday with 14 points while Kerry Brooks and Ronald Davis chipped in with nine points apiece. The Trojans led Sterlington 21-16 at halftime and 36-30 at the end of the third quarter.
“Our scoring was sporadic. But we played sporadic on the inside,” Watkins said. “This was a game that wasn’t supposed to be that close.”
The Panthers made the game close in the fourth quarter, but miscues down the stretch allowed the Trojans to get much-needed breathing room.
“The defense was the key in the fourth quarter. The guards had some turnovers late in the game that let us pull away,” Watkins. “Our big guys are still playing big.”
Ferriday (12-10, 5-1) will travel to Lake Providence Friday night to take on General Trass.
St. Mary’s 59, Block 53
JONESVILLE — Ryan Cunningham led St. Mary’s High School with a game-high 22 points as the Tigers needed a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Block High School Bears 59-53 Friday night in an LHSAA District 3-1A game.
“They didn’t have many turnovers. We had too many turnovers,” Bears head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “They wanted it more than we did. They played harder.”
The game was a seesaw battle between the two teams for the first three quarters. Block led St. Mary’s 14-9 at the end of the first quarter before St. Mary’s got on track offensively in the second quarter and outscored the Bears 19-15 to go into halftime down by just one point, 29-28.
The third quarter was close all the way, but the Bears managed to outscore the Tigers 14-12 for a 43-40 advantage. However, that lead would be short-lived as St. Mary’s turned not only to Cunningham, but also Aaron Howell and Bailey Shelton and some good defense to allow the Tigers to outscore Block 19-10 for the comeback victory.
“They were better on free throws (Tuesday). They also made a lot of 3-pointers,” Vault said.
Howell and Shelton finished with 11 points each for St. Mary’s. The Bears were led by Chris Holmes with 18 points and Dorian Bowman with 13 points.
Block (11-10, 2-4) next plays at Logansport Friday night.
Tallulah Academy 56, WCCA 51
WOODVILLE — After giving up 25 points in the second quarter, foul trouble plagued Wilkinson County Christian Academy in the third quarter and that proved to be the difference as the Rams lost to the Tallulah Academy Trojans 56-51 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 7-A game.
A low-scoring first quarter ended with WCCA leading Tallulah Academy 10-6. While both teams got going in the second quarter, the Trojans made more shots than the Rams did on their way to a 31-27 halftime lead.
But in the third quarter, some of the Rams’ starters were called for either their third or fourth foul. Despite that the Trojans only outscored them 11-6 for a 42-33 lead.
“In the third quarter, we had some guys that got in foul trouble. We just kid of got out of our game plan and had some shots that didn’t fall,” Rams head coach Joshua Fortier said. The fourth quarter was one of the best quarters WCCA had all season long as far as playing together on offense and yet it still wasn’t enough.
Colton Nettles led the Rams with 14 points and Hutch Holden finished with 11 points.
WCCA (4-17, N/A) next plays Friday night when it hosts Franklin Academy for senior night.
Jefferson County def. Franklin County (OT)
FAYETTE — The Jefferson County High School Tigers defeated the Franklin County High School Bulldogs by three points in overtime in MHSAA Division 7-3A action Tuesday night.
Jefferson County head coach Marcus Walton said the game was close all they way and could’ve gone either way. He added that the biggest lead for either team the whole game was four points.
“Two competitive, well-coached teams,” Walton said. “Franklin County plays hard. Very well-coached.”
