NATCHEZ — Phone scammers calling Natchez residents may make them think they are in trouble with the law, but that’s not the case.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday reported receiving several reports of phone scammers, calling from a Picayune listing, ACSO spokesperson Courtney Taylor said.

Also, a Natchez resident reported receiving a call telling her she owed money because she failed to show up for jury duty, which was not the case.

The scam caller told the resident she needed to bring cash to Fred’s to pick up a card to take to the sheriff’s office.

That scam call was placed from 601-215-9248, the resident said.

The resident reported the call to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who said his department had received other calls reporting similar incidents.

Taylor said the scammers allegedly inform area residents that because of their failure to show up for court after signing a subpoena, a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

“They will also ask you to meet them at a certain location or to send them money,” Taylor said.

Upon answering the phone, the scammers will then alert area residents that they are from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division, but according to Taylor, no such division exists.

The scammers will also give an address of 303 State St., which is not the correct address, Taylor said.

Taylor said if an area resident receives a call regarding their failure to show up for court, call the Sheriff’s Office at 601-442-2752.

“Do not meet them — do not send money,” Taylor said.
