ACCS, CHS get big wins in contests

PRENTISS — While Prentiss Christian School’s effort to hold Brandon Brooks in check worked, the Saints did not have nearly enough offensive firepower to keep up with Adams County Christian School Rebels Friday night.

And definitely not the balanced scoring that ACCS has been known for all season long. Brody Cole led the Rebels with 11 points while Trey Fleming and Devin Spear had eight points each as they defeated the Saints 62-30 in the semifinals of the MAIS District 5-AA Tournament.

Prentiss Christian went to a zone defense to basically make sure that Brooks would not score at will on the inside. He finished with seven points, but he was just one of seven ACCS players to finish with at least that total. Tyler Stockstill added eight points and both Jay Fleming and Lester Wells contributed with seven points apiece.

“They played zone and tried to take Brandon away. They made sure Brandon would not have his way,” Rebels head coach Richy Spears said. “But other (players) hit their shots. We had some guards score tonight.”

The Rebels also decided to pick up the pace with their style of defense. By the end of the first quarter, they had a 20-8 lead over the Saints. Once halftime arrived, ACCS led Prentiss Christian 33-16.

The second half was more of the same. ACCS outscored Prentiss Christian 16-7 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the fourth quarter.

“We kind of knew what to expect. We tried to cut off the (passing) lanes. We tried to get out and pick up the pace. Other teams try to slow down against us,” Spears said. “We tried to pick up the defense and make them play faster than they want to.”

Even though ACCS went into this game as the No. 1 seed, it was the visiting team because No. 4 seed Prentiss Christian is also the tournament host. That didn’t seem to bother the Rebels at all.

The Saints were led by Josh Daly with a game-high 12 points while Austin Daughdrill and Peyton Dungan added six points each.

ACCS (22-3) will take on No. 3 seed Central Hinds Academy at 7:45 p.m. today in the boys’ championship game. The win over Prentiss Christian also secured the Rebels’ berth in next week’s MAIS Class AA South State Tournament.

Cathedral 61, Bogue Chitto 34

NATCHEZ — R.J. Givens led Cathedral High School with 12 points and James Coley had 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Green Wave took care of the Bogue Chitto High School Bobcats 61-34 Friday night in an MHSAA Division 7-1A game.

“When we played them there, (James) had two points and 17 or 18 rebounds. We knew we had an advantage size-wise,” Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said. “R.J. takes eight shots to score 12 poitns. James is bigger and draws more attention.”

Those weren’t the only two players to have solid performances in this game. Jardarius Anderson had eight points, six assists, nine rebounds and three steals. Jacob Hamilton and Alex Weadock had seven points each.

After leading just 13-12 after one quarter of play, the Green Wave turned up the defensive pressure on the Bobcats several notches – especially in the second half. Cathedral led at halftime 25-18 before outscoring Bogue Chitto 17-6 in the third quarter and 19-9 in the fourth quarter.

Cathedral (8-9, 6-3) plays host to St. Aloysius for Senior Night in their division and regular-season finale next Tuesday night.

Silliman Institute 56, Centreville Academy 52

FRANKLINTON, La. — Despite a game-high 20 points from John Gray and 11 points from Matt Darden, the Centreville Academy Tigers were upset by the Silliman Institute Wildcats 56-52 Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the MAIS District 6-AA Tournament held at Bowling Green School.

And after having a 19-14 advantage over the Wildcats in the third quarter for a 43-38 lead, it looked like the Tigers were well on their way to doing just that. Instead, the Wildcats responded in a big way as they put up 18 points in the fourth quarter while holding the Tigers to just nine points.

Which now means that Centreville must defeat the loser of the Ben’s Ford/Bowling Green semifinal game in the third-place game today at 3:15 p.m. to advance to South State or its season will come to an end.

Ferriday 82, Oak Grove 49

FERRIDAY — Zadarius Rosenthal scored 15 points and Ronald Williams had 13 points to led five Ferriday High School players in double figures as the Trojans defeated the Oak Grove Tigers 82-49 in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Friday night.

The other three players to put up double-digit scoring were Kerry Brooks with 12 points, Shannon Morales with 11 points and Datron Leonard with 10 points. Even though Dantrieze Scott scored just one points, his defense was a big factor.

Ferriday (9-15, 8-1) plays host to Jonesboro-Hodge next Tuesday night.

Wingfield 77, Natchez High 71

JACKSON — Even though Natchez High School had four players score in double figures, the Bulldogs could not overcome a disappointing third quarter as they lost to the Wingfield High School Falcons 77-71 in their MHSAA Division 6-5A regular-season finale Friday night.

Daryl Jones led the Bulldogs with 22 points while Micheal Morris had 18 points, Dominique Mazique added 14 points, and Ja’Darrius Ivory contributed with 10 points. Natchez High played well in the first half, especially on the defensive end. The Bulldogs led Wingfield 18-12 after one quarter of play and 31-27 halftime. But this was senior night for the Falcons as Natchez High assistant coach David Haywood said after the game.

Natchez High (10-7, 3-3) plays host to Oak Grove (Miss.) next Friday night in is regular-season finale.

Block 81, Montgomery 66

JONESVILLE — Ray Plummer led Block High School with a game-high 30 points and Kendarius Jones had 18 points as the Bears defeated the Montgomery High School Tigers 81-66 Friday night in LHSAA District 3-1A action.

Vault added that a lot of Block’s points came from the inside and that his team didn’t shoot as many three-pointers as it has during the season. He said that Jones played good defense and got a lot of inside buckets. Block (N/A, 4-5) finishes up district play next Tuesday night at LaSalle.

Jena 62, Vidalia 60

JENA, La. — The third quarter was Vidalia High School’s undoing as the Vikings lost to the Jena High School Giants 62-60 Friday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

Vidalia led Jena 32-30 at halftime before the Vikings were outscored by the Giants 13-10 in the third quarter. That gave Jena a 43-42 lead and the Giants managed to outscore the Vikings 19-18 in the fourth quarter. Julius Wilson led the Vikings with 16 points while Demarco Brown and Malik Jefferson had 13 points each.

Vidalia (13-10, 4-3) next plays at Marksville Tuesday night.

Hazlehurst 54, Jefferson County 52

FAYETTE — The Jefferson County High School Tigers tried to overcome a rough first quarter, but their second-half rally fell just a bit short as they lost to the Hazlehurst High School Indians 54-52 in MHSAA Division 7-3A action Friday night.

Jefferson County trailed Hazlehurst 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Indians were not able to put the Tigers away. Still, they had a 35-29 lead after three quarters of play.

Akeem Wililams led the Tigers with 14 points and Christian Day chipped in with 13 points.

Jefferson County (records not available) plays host to Wilkinson County next Tuesday night.
