NATCHEZ — Delta Charter School will host the first “Youth Basketball Skillz Academy” for ages 8 through 14 from June 1 until June 5.
Coordinating the camp will be Delta Charter girls basketball coach Ronald Ellis, who played at Vidalia and Grambling State University, Jessie Banks, who played for the Vikings, as well, and Gary Stewart, who played for Vidalia and Northwestern State University (in Natchitoches).
“We just want to teach the kids the fundamentals,” Ellis said. “A lot of times you see kids getting to high school who haven’t even learned the fundamentals yet, so that’s our main priority with this camp.”
The camp will teach dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and overall basketball IQ. It will begin at 9 a.m. with a lunch break at noon before continuing from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Making special appearances at the camp will be Larry Wright and Kenny Sykes. Wright coached Ellis at Grambling and also played in the NBA. Sykes was the 1994-95 SWAC Player of the Year at Grambling.
Admission to the camp is $50. For more information, call Ellis at 601-431-1416.
