Generosity of community amazing

Natchezians are generous folks. The volunteers at the Natchez Community Stewpot can attest to that fact.

On Sunday, thanks to the Empty Bowls fundraiser, Natchez residents came together to add approximately $11,000 to the coffers of the Stewpot.

Residents purchased tickets for $25 each, allowing them to select a handmade clay bowl, which was filled with gumbo. After enjoying the meal, donors took their handmade bowl home with them.

Tickets for Empty Bowls sold out well in advance of Sunday’s event.

Organizers said the premise behind the Empty Bowls is to call attention to the existence of people in our community who do not have enough to eat and need our help.

New Natchez Clay owners Patricia Gaudé and Sarah Meriwether said they hope to make Empty Bowls an annual event.

The Stewpot fills an important role in our community. For a variety of reasons, some here find only empty bowls in their own cupboards.

However, thanks to the Stewpot and the generosity of those who donate to it, a meal is often available to them.

The Stewpot and its staff and volunteers are worthy recipients of our community’s support.
