LEARNED — The Trinity Lady Saints’ season came to an end in a heartbreaking 75-72 loss to Carroll Academy.

“I’d rather lose by 30 than lose by three,” Trinity head coach Fay Minor said.

The game came down to two free throws from Trinity’s D’Asia Mitchell that would have sent the game into overtime, but Mitchell could not convert at the line.

“She was very distraught about it,” Minor said. “I can’t say enough about D’Asia, though, because she carried this team all season long. The girls were down after the game, but I told them they had a great season and that they needed to pick their heads up.”

Mitchell scored 23 points in the loss, as did teammate Jasmine Ivory. Minor said Ivory has come on strong for the Lady Saints in the last few games.

“She was really becoming that leader,” Minor said. “She pretty much took the game over. She came up to me and said, ‘I’m ready to go.’”

Trinity jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first quarter, before being outscored 28-16 in the second. Carroll took a 58-46 lead into the fourth quarter, but (20-7) Trinity went on to rally and outscore Carroll 26-17 in the final period, coming up just short of the victory.

Cathedral 46, Bogue Chitto 50

VICKSBURG — Missed free throws would ultimately deal the Cathedral Lady Wave a loss in the second round of the MHSAA Division 7-1A Tournament.

Holding onto a one-point lead with 1:38 left to play against Bogue Chitto, (13-8) Cathedral saw its fourth quarter lead slip through its hands with nine missed field goals in the final quarter.

“We made only 12-of-22 free throws,” Cathedral head coach Randy Smith said. “That was what got us. Our defense was good, we scored pretty well, but we couldn’t finish with free throws. It was an outstanding game.”

Cathedral led Bogue Chitto 12-8 in the first quarter, before the Lady Bobcats took a 20-16 lead into halftime. Cathedral regained a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter, leading 31-30.

After Bogue Chitto regained the lead in the fourth quarter, Cathedral had an opportunity to either tie or win it with seven seconds remaining. Cathedral threw it away, though, and a buzzer beater on the other end gave Bogue Chitto the 50-46 victory.

Cathedral’s Elizabeth Smith led all scorers with 19 in the game, while Zariah Matthews led the Lady Bobcats with 13.

Following the loss, Cathedral will play St. Aloysius at 4 p.m. today in the consolation game.

“We feel that our district is very strong, and that this will help us in the tournament next week,” Smith said.

Episcopal 52, Ferriday 27

BATON ROUGE — A slow start dug an early hole the Ferriday Trojans were unable to climb out of in the first round of the LHSAA Class AA tournament.

Ferriday was unable to score any points in the opening period, going into the second quarter down 14-0.

“We were absolutely cold as ice,” Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron said. “We just couldn’t get anything to fall. It might have been the hype from just being here, because it was the first time for a lot of them. Maybe they were a little nervous.”

Shaniqua Hillard led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 11 tonight, however, Episcopal’s size underneath made points hard to come by for the Lady Trojans.

“They played a really packed zone,” Abron said. “We couldn’t get anything inside. They had two big girls down low, and we couldn’t ever adjust to that assignment.”

Abron said she was going to give the team two weeks off and then begin working out with them again, preparing for a brighter future with the Lady Trojans.

Cathedral 62, St. Aloysius 54 (boys)

VICKSBURG — Jardarius Anderson had his best shooting night of the season, scoring 25 points, to lead the Cathedral Green Wave to a 62-54 victory Thursday night.

“They were guarding him, and that started leaving Alex (Weadock) and Wyatt (Boothe) open,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said.

Arnold told his team before the game that if any of his players committed two fouls in the first half they were going to sit, because he wanted to have his five starters on the court in the fourth quarter.

“I believed our starting five could beat their starting five,” Arnold said.

The move paid off as (10-9) Cathedral outscored St. Aloysius 19-17 in the final period to secure the victory.

Cathedral will play Pelahatchie at 8:30 p.m.
