NATCHEZ — With a recent increase in car theft incidents, law enforcement officers are urging residents to lock their vehicles and hide valuable items.
The Natchez Police Department reported three vehicle thefts Sunday—one at 401 High St., which is the parking lot of Carriage House Restaurant, and two others on Canal and Commerce streets.
Items stolen include a radio, purses and cash totaling $350. No arrests have been made in connection with the burglaries.
“Our problem with the downtown burglaries is that when the victims see the suspect, we get the exact same clothing description—black pants, black hoodie, black gloves,” said Lt. Craig Godbold of the Natchez Police Department. “It’s cold outside. Everyone is wearing that similar outfit.”
Surveillance video footage has been recovered from the thefts, and Godbold said the police department is currently working to enhance images to gain a better description of the suspect or suspects.
Most thefts — excluding the incident reported at the Carriage House parking lot — occurred when residents left cars unlocked, Godbold said.
“We’re trying to make people more cautious of what they’re leaving in their car,” Godbold said. “If you leave a Michael Kors purse in your car and you park out on the street, you’re inviting someone to steal your purse.”
And although no arrests have been made in Sunday’s car burglaries, the Natchez Police Department has one suspect in custody in connection with a vehicle theft that occurred Saturday on Monette Street.
Marquacius Robinson, 21, 12 Elbow Lane, was arrested Sunday for one count of larceny and is currently being held at the Natchez Police Department under a $687 bond.
Godbold said the police department doesn’t suspect Robinson is connected with Sunday’s burglaries.
