NATCHEZ — Elizabeth Smith hit a walk-off three-run home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave rallied to defeat the West Lincoln Lady Bears 6-4 Monday night.
Cathedral went into the bottom of the seventh trailing West Lincoln 4-1 and with little to show offensively with less than a handful of base hits and even more errors by the defense — five of them to be exact.
“We had two or three hits through five innings and he had eight hits the last two innings,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “I was proud of them for hanging tough and keeping their composure to the end.”
Before Smith won the game for the Lady Green Wave with her home run, Mackenzie Watts started the comeback with a two-run double, her only base hit of the game.
West Lincoln took a 3-0 lead with one run each in the top of the third, fourth and sixth innings. Cathedral finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lady Bears counted with one run of their own in the top of the seventh.
Malori Hall seemed to be in control on the mound for West Lincoln. She kept mowing down one batter after another through six strong innings and finished with nine strikeouts and not a single walk, which is what made this come-from-behind win for Cathedral all the more impressive.
Smith went the distance and gave up three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Hall went six and one-third innings and allowed 11 hits.
Abby Brown went 2-for-3 and Baylee Graning was 2-for-4 for the Lady Green Wave. Micah Redd and Layton Sills each had a double for the Lady Bears.
Cathedral (3-2) plays host to Warren Central today at 6 p.m.
Jena 9, Vidalia 1
JENA, La. — Braegan Burlew’s two-run single highlighted a four-run rally by Jena in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Lady Giants went on to defeat the Vidalia Lady Vikings 9-1 Monday afternoon in what was the LHSAA District 3-3A opener for Vidalia.
With the scored tied at 1-1, Jena first loaded the bases and Vidalia’s Taylor Rodgers then retired the next two batters. After that, the Lady Giants’ bats woke up. Burlew’s base hit was followed by a pair of RBI singles to give them a 5-1 lead.
Then in the bottom of the sixth, Kelsey Bradford blasted a two-run home run off Rodgers as Jena scored four more runs to go ahead 9-1. Winning pitcher Kourtney Bacle capped off a brilliant performance by retiring the Lady Vikings in the top of the seventh.
“We weren’t ready to play and that’s my fault. We have had so much rain here in the Miss-Lou in the last week,” Vidalia head coach Forrest Foster said. “We weren’t as sharp as we should’ve been. We couldn’t get the ball to fall in the hole.”
Bacle limited the Lady Vikings to just two hits and struck out five to go with four walks in a complete-game win. Those two hits were singles by Madison Johnston and Mallory Wheeler. After giving up one run in the top of the first inning, Bacle pitched six straight scoreless innings.
“All five strikeouts were looking. The biggest difference was their balls were dropping in the hole and ours weren’t,” Foster said. “They were a little more disciplined. Defensively, we were fine. We had three errors. Two of them were dropped pop-ups.”
However, after tying the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, Rodgers held her own against a good Jena team. She kept the Lady Giants off the scoreboard over the next three innings before the home team took control late.
Rodgers gave up nine runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and four walks in six innings.
Bradford ended up going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and Burlew went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Jena at the plate.
Foster said that not being able to play any games last week, or for that matter not much practice, because of the inclement weather affected the Lady Vikings.
“It’s terrible. It’s a mental deal. Everyone has to go through it. Overall, I’m not pleased but I’m not terribly disappointed,” Foster said. “It’s a big difference between teams that have played five or six games and teams that have played two games. But that’s not an excuse. I think we will be sharper tomorrow (afternoon).”
Vidalia (2-1, 0-1) next plays at Caldwell Parish today at 4 p.m. This will be the second of four straight district games the Lady Vikings are scheduled to play over a four-day span this week.
Trinity (baseball) falls in doubleheader
NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal Saints lost an MHSAA District 7-A varsity doubleheader to the Tensas Academy Chiefs Monday afternoon at Chester Willis Field to remain winless this season.
And in both games, neither team had very many base hits. Tensas Academy took the first game 12-1 in five innings. Trinity Episcopal out-hit Tensas Academy 3-2 in that game, but the Saints also committed four errors.
Jakarius Caston had a double and Jacob Netterville was 2-for-3 to account for Trinity’s offense.
Game two was a much higher scoring game as the Chiefs used a pair of eight-run innings to defeat the Saints 23-13 in a game that was surprisingly called after just four innings.
Even though the two teams combined for 36 runs, they only managed a grand total of five base hits. Tensas Academy ended up with four of them, including a double by Seth Brown. The Chiefs put up eight runs in the top of the first and second innings and led the Saints 21-9 after three innings of play. The only hit for the Saints was a single by Lane Austin in the bottom of the first inning.
Trinity Episcopal (0-5, 0-2) hosts Wilkinson County Christian Academy in a district match-up today at 6 p.m.
Delta Charter 15, Rayville 3
FERRIDAY — Lee Lancaster struck out seven batters in just three and a third innings as the Delta Charter Storm defeated the Rayville Hornets 15-3 in five innings Monday afternoon.
“We just slapped it around and (Rayville) made a bunch of errors,” Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpaiur said. “They hit four or five guys and they had a bunch of walks.”
Hoffpauir added that he was expecting his team to come out slow after not seeing a pitch in at least a month. The Storm scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and seven in the bottom of the second to set the tone for the game.
“We came out ready to play. The adrenaline got to ‘em,” Hoffpauir said. “We jumped out on them early.”
Lancaster held the Hornets to just one hit and gave way to Payton Holland for the last inning and a third.
Delta Charter next plays at Mangham today at 5 p.m.
