VIDALIA — The Vidalia Lady Vikings fell to Buckeye 7-2 Thursday evening, and despite the loss, Vidalia head coach Forrest Foster upbeat.
“Look, Buckeye is a really good team, and we played them better tonight than we ever have,” Foster said.
Foster said (4-2) Vidalia allowed three runs in the top of the second inning on “mental mistakes.” Coming off back-to-back wins, Taylor Rodgers was on the mound for the third straight day in a row, but this outing provided a different result.
The Lady Panthers added another run in the fourth, two in the fifth and stretched their lead to seven in the sixth inning. Buckeye pitcher Taylor Campbell held Vidalia at bay in the batter’s box, leading to six scoreless innings before the seventh inning.
“I think one of our biggest problems right now is in the batter’s box,” Foster said. “We aren’t as confident as we should be.”
The Lady Vikings would rack up five hits in the game, most of them coming in the final inning, where the Lady Vikings scored two runs and had the bases loaded to end the inning.
“I’m tickled to death with this team,” Foster said. “The kids played hard tonight and fought the whole ballgame. I think the next time we play Buckeye, it will be a much closer game.”
Natchez High 0, Brookhaven 17
BROOKHAVEN — Natchez head coach Falana McDaniel is faced with the task of turning around a softball program that failed to win a game last season.
McDaniel faced the first bump in the road on her path to rebuilding in the form of a 17-0 loss to Brookhaven.
“They’re learning a lot right now,” McDaniel said. “We have a lot of players that are just trying to get used to playing because it’s their first year of playing.”
Destiny Lyles, Taylor Frye and Destiny Trask all recorded hits in the game.
One of the bright spots in the game for Natchez was the performance of Carleigh Scroulls, a seventh grader who pitched in junior varsity and relieved in the varsity game.
“She did a great job,” McDaniel said. “A lot of these girls did a great job. It’s a process.”
