MOREAUVILLE, La. — Before Taylor Rodgers stepped on the mound for Vidalia High School in its LHSAA District 3-3A game at Avoyelles High School, she made her presence known at the plate.

Rodgers blasted a two-run home run during a six-run output for the Lady Vikings in the top of the first inning, and then proceeded to limit Avoyelles to just one hit over five innings of work in a 12-1 win over the Lady Mustangs in six innings Monday afternoon.

Vidalia added to already impressive 6-0 lead with two runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead 8-0. Avoyelles would score its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Even though the Lady Vikings would eventually score enough runs to end the game early by way of run-ruling the Lady Mustangs, Jensen Gremillion pitched all six innings. She gave up 12 runs on 10 hits and five walks with just one strikeout. The defense behind her did not help at all with four errors.

Rodgers struck out six batters and walked three batters to pick up the win. Cassie Gonzales was also instrumental for Vidalia both at the plate and on the mound. Gonzales hit a two-run double in the top of the first and came on in relief to pitch the bottom of the sixth inning. She allowed one hit, struck out one and walked none.

Gonzales ended up going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in. Rodgers also drove in three runs. Katelynn Bertelsen was 2-for-4 with a double, Katelin Temple went 2-for-4, and Katlyn McCarver had a double.

The only batter for Avoyelles to give Vidalia any trouble was Karli McCaleb, who went 2-for-3 with a double.

McCaleb was also able to draw a walk.

Vidalia (5-2, 3-2) steps out of district play when it plays host to Neville High School today at 5 p.m.

Jena 9, Vidalia 3 (baseball)

JENA, La. — For the first time this season, the Vidalia Vikings failed to produce a single extra-base hit as they lost to the Jena Giants 9-3 Monday night in their LHSAA District 3-3A opener.

William Handjis was charged with the loss for Vidalia. William Finks was the winning pitcher for Jena.

Vidalia (9-1, 0-1) resumes action Thursday when they play host to Caldwell Parish at 6 p.m.
