LIBERTY — It took 13 innings and an incredible pitching performance by Wade Simpson for the Adams County Christian School Rebels to defeat the Amite School Center Rebels 6-2 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 5-AA game.

ACCS held a 2-1 lead over Amite School Center before the host Rebels tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth. The game went into extra innings with the score still tied at 2-2 and it remained that way until the visiting Rebels scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning.

Simpson preserved the win by holding Amite School Center scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. He gave up two runs on four hits with a jaw-dropping 24 strikeouts with four walks.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before,” ACCS assistant coach Matthew Freeman said. “He refused to come out of the game. Obviously don’t want to put that many pitches on his arm but he earned it.”

Freeman said Simpson started the game throwing submarine style and eventually shifted to over the top as the game progressed.

Freeman said that the Rebels only warmed up another pitcher once, but Simpson was able to power through and stay in the game.

He finished with 188 total pitches.

“He is a warrior,” head coach Richy Spears said. “One of the toughest kids I’ve coached.”

Simpson provided the game winning runs on a double in the top of the 13th, and Spears said he had to visit with the senior in the bottom of the inning to calm him down on the mound.

“ I just to not overthrow or try to hard,” he said. “Keep doing what you’re doing. I could tell in the last inning he was pumped up, so I told him to relax and breathe.”

Tyler Stockstill had three hits and Simpson had two hits with both having one run batted in.

ACCS (2-5, 2-3) hosts Amite School Center Friday at 6 p.m.

Monterey 13, Harrisonburg 2

MONTEREY — Led by the pitching of Bailey Book and Gentry McDonald, the Monterey Lady Wolves defeated the Harrisonburg Lady Bulldogs 13-2 in five innings Tuesday afternoon in the LHSAA District 6-B opener for both teams.

Book got the start and went two innings while not allowing a single run. McDonald come on in relief and gave up two runs in three innings of work. Both of those runs were in the top of the third inning.

“Bailey and Gentry did a good job. They got the ball over the plate and we played defense behind them,” Lady Wolves head coach Cary Shivley said.

Monterey scored two run in the bottom of each of the first three innings and ended the game early with a six-run barrage in the bottom of the fourth. McDonald, Sidney Smith and Sydney Woodruff each had a double.

“We jumped out early. We just put the ball in play and kept hitting good pitches and the ball kept going in the hole and we were able to score,” Shivley said. “We played pretty good defense and our pitchers pitched well.”

Shivley added that it was good for his team to get that first district win under their belts.

Monterey (5-4, 1-0) plays host to Forest today at 3:30 p.m.

Neville 9, Vidalia 8

VIDALIA — After giving up eight runs in the top of the fifth inning, Vidalia was staring in the face on a 9-4 deficit. The Lady Vikings rallied to make it a one-run game after the bottom of the sixth, but their comeback attempt fell short as they lost to the Neville Lady Tigers 9-8 Tuesday afternoon.

Untimely walks and errors by Vidalia were the main factors in Neville putting up so many runs in its half of the fifth inning. The big hit for the Lady Tigers was a two-run double by Shay Harris.

The Lady Vikings had an 11-to-6 advantage in total hits and they had four multiple hitters to the Lady Tigers’ zero. Taylor Rodgers had more strikeouts than Mary Claire Shepard did (both pitchers went all seven innings). But it still was not enough.

Rodgers allowed nine runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Shepard gave up eight runs on 11 hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts.

Vidalia (5-3) returns to LHSAA District 3-3A play at 4 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Caldwell Parish.

LaSalle 8, Block 0

Monterey 8, Holden 2

MONTEREY — Jake Cooper struck out 14 batters and Jake Barlow drove in three runs as the Monterey Wolves defeated the Holden Rockets 8-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Cooper went the distance and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks. He helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Barlow got the offense going with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and ended up going 2-for-2.

Holden tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning before Monterey pulled away thanks to a five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Ashton Blank went 2-for-3 with a double while both Kade Passman and Tommy Poole were 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Monterey (7-1) plays host to Georgetown at 4 p.m. Thursday – weather permitting.

Brookhaven 12, Natchez High 1

BROOKHAVEN — Travez Lyles held Brookhaven High School to just two hits and struck out five batters over five innings. The problem was he also walked 14 batters, the majority of them during an 11-run rally in the bottom of the third inning.

And that allowed the Panthers to cruise to a 12-1 win over the Natchez High Bulldogs in five innings Tuesday night in an MHSAA Division 6-5A game. Scotty Bateman was the winning pitcher for Brookhaven after giving up one run on two hits.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the third inning, only to see that go away quickly in the bottom of the first. Natchez High’s Dalvion Jackson had the only extra-base hit for either team with a double.

Natchez High (3-3, 0-2) hosts Brookhaven Friday at 7 p.m.

Centreville Academy 11, Central Private School 5

BAKER, La. — John Marcus McDowell hit a grand slam home run and Hayden Mounce had a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning as the Centreville Academy Tigers defeated the Central Private School Rebels 11-5 Tuesday night to remain undefeated in MAIS District 6-AA.

Britt Netterville got the win after a solid performance on the mound for Centreville. He allowed four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and just one walk in six and two-thirds innings. And he had a triple at the plate.

The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the third inning for a 4-1 lead and they led the Rebels 5-1 at the end of the fifth inning. Then McDowell and Mounce accounted for all six Centreville runs in the top of the sixth that put the game away.

Mounce ended up going 2-for-4 and Chase Hughes was 2-for-3. Jordan Clark added a double for the Tigers.

Centreville Academy (12-3, 4-0) hosts Central Private for a varsity doubleheader on Friday starting at 4:30 p.m.

Delta Charter 12, Avoyelles Charter 2

MANSURA, La. — Delta Charter’s Carson Curtis had as many base hits by himself as Avoyelles Charter had as a team as the Storm used an eight-run sixth inning to defeat the Vikings 12-2 in six innings Tuesday afternoon.

The Storm jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play before the Vikings plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. But Delta Charter pulled away in the top of the sixth inning.

Curtis went 4-for-5 with a double and winning pitcher Trenton Miller was 3-for-5 with a double. On the mound, Miller gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in five and two-thirds innings.

Delta Charter (4-1) next plays at 6 p.m. Friday at Rayville.
