Grave items taken?

NATCHEZ — Area residents are seeking to find who took items from a Kingston-area cemetery.
Kassandra Craft’s infant daughter Kristen Reagan has been buried in the Jersey Settlers cemetery since her death in March 2005. Craft said she made a visit to her daughter’s grave in February and left a few items — including a cross, a pinwheel and an angel figurine and balloons — to mark the visit, but when she returned this month to clear the items so they wouldn’t be in the way of the cemetery grounds crew, the items were gone.
Craft has several family and friends buried in the cemetery — including the infant daughter of another friend — and said she found items at their grave plots had been removed, as well.
“I talked to the groundskeeper, and he said he didn’t remove anything, and the grass cutter didn’t remove anything,” Craft said.
“They have all determined none of them removed things. There are people going out there and removing things without any kind of authority or permission to do so.”
Robin Latham has several family members buried in the cemetery, most recently her granddaughter in 2013 but also her father and sister. When the family bought its plots, they weren’t given a list of rules, though Latham said she’s found out the cemetery association has developed a booklet since then.
Latham’s sister’s grave had angel solar lights around it, while her granddaughter’s grave had small angel statues, plaques and a baby doll on it, all contained within a border around the plot.
“The new rule books says plaques and statues are fine as long as they’re at the base of the stone, but toys aren’t allowed,” she said. “I don’t mind that, but I just think everybody should get their stuff back.”
Latham said she has spoken with cemetery trustees, and they told her they weren’t behind the removal of items.
“It looks to me like somebody took it upon themselves to do away with some stuff they thought shouldn’t be out there,” she said.
Craft said she has spoken with law enforcement officers about the matter.
An Adams County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said an investigator has been assigned to the matter.
