NATCHEZ — As per usual this season, the Cathedral softball team took a few innings before executing to the Lady Wave’s ability Friday night. But once Cathedral put the ball in motion against Enterprise, there was no looking back in the 11-5 victory.
“It takes us a while to get it cranked up, but we’ve always been able to keep our composure,” said Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell. “We get those hits when we need them, and that’s what happened tonight.”
Enterprise took a 4-3 lead into the fifth inning before walking Cathedral batters and committing errors to set up a bases loaded situation for Cathedral slugger Marty Lewis. Lewis cleared the bases with a double, putting the exclamation point on a six-run inning that gave the Lady Wave a 9-4 lead.
Elizabeth Smith picked up the win for the Lady Wave. Smith gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Smith struck out six in the win.
Mckenzie Milligan led the team in hits, going 3-for-5 in the contest with three singles. Blackwell said Milligan has been catching fire as of late.
“She’s been hot at the plate in the last two or three games,” Blackwell said. “She’s seeing the ball well, and when she gets on base, she usually scores because of her speed. We have Baylee Graning following behind her, and that’s two really quick base runners.”
Graning had a double in the contest for Cathedral, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
With the win, Cathedral improves to 7-7 on the season, and the Lady Wave will next play at St. Aloysius at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
