NATCHEZ — The Mississippi Department of Transportation has completed inspections on the U.S. 84 bridge across the Mississippi River following a barge strike Sunday evening.
The strike resulted in no damage and the results were only cosmetic in nature, according to MDOT spokesman Jason Scott.
“There were just some small scuffs on tiers 1 and 2 where the barges scraped by them,” Scott said.
“As far as MDOT is concerned, everything is back to normal.”
Scott said MDOT’s southern district bridge inspection team completed the inspections.
The strike happened early Sunday evening after a tugboat moving 21 barges upriver bumped a bridge pylon, knocking the barges loose.
The boat that was pushing the group of 21 barges was the Lindsay Ann Erickson, owned by Marquette Transportaion of Paducah, Ky.
U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River Public Affairs Officer Lt. Brian Porter said the matter remains an active investigation.
Porter declined to name the who was piloting the boat, but said 15 of the barges were carrying dry cargo while six of the barges were empty.
All of the barges remain in storage at Vidalia Dock and Storage, where they were taken after the incident Sunday, and Porter said none are suspected of being in danger of sinking.
The captain of the boat is cooperating with the investigation, he said.
