VIDALIA — Taylor Rodgers pitched a three-hit shutout and hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Vidalia Lady Vikings defeated the Avoyelles Lady Mustangs Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

Rodgers had a magnificent game in Vidalia’s regular season home finale at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex. She struck out five batters and did not walk anyone and her two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the fifth ended the game due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Vidalia scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and again in the bottom of the third to go up 4-0. The Lady Vikings added three runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the fifth.

Rodgers also had a triple and finished 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. She was a double away from hitting for the cycle. Shelbie Vinet had an outstanding performance at the plate as she went 3-for-3. Katelin Temple and Mallory Wheeler each had two RBIs.

Jensen Gremillion took the loss after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits and four walks with just one strikeout in four and one-third innings.

With the win Vidalia (14-5, 7-3) will finish in third place in District 3-3A behind Jena and Buckeye. The Lady Vikings next play at the Mangham Tournament this weekend. They will take on host Mangham at 6 p.m. today, followed by a pair of games on Saturday, first against Ouachita Christian at 11 a.m. and then against Sterlington at 3 p.m.

Monterey 13, Avoyelles Charter 3

MONTEREY — Bailey Book limited Avoyelles Charter to just one hit and Jody Duncan hit a leadoff home run as the Monterey Lady Wolves took care of those Lady Vikings 13-3 in six innings Thursday afternoon to win the LHSAA District 6-B championship.

“I felt like we came out focused and ready to play a game. They came out ready to play and it showed,” Monterey head coach Cary Shivley said.

Book went all six innings and allowed three runs (only one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Two of Avoyelles Charter’s three runs were aided by two Monterey errors in the top of the fourth inning.

Duncan, who batted first, got things going for the Lady Wolves with her home run in the bottom of the first inning. They would go on to score three runs in the frame and by the time the third inning was over, they had a 6-0 lead.

“I think it jump-started us right there. Everybody was excited and got in ready to hit,” Shivley said. “We’ve seen this pitcher before.”

Monterey added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and four in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Duncan also had a double and went 2-for-3.

Monterey (11-10, 5-1) plays again next Monday at 4 and 5:30 p.m. when it hosts Vidalia for a varsity doubleheader.
