VIDALIA — Two people who were part of what Vidalia police officials described as a check forgery ring were arrested this week.
W.C. Curtis, 29, 144 North Shields Lane, Natchez, was arrested on a bench warrant for attempted forgery, while Tiare Jonte Nelson, 32, 207 N. Union St., Natchez, was arrested on charges of two counts forgery.
Curtis’ arrest stemmed from a December investigation at a local bank, while Nelson’s followed a 2013 investigation at a local business.
Vidalia police officials said other arrests have been made in the past in connection with the alleged ring.
Vidalia Police Chief Arthur Lewis said he wants the community to be aware of signs that a check could be counterfeit before accepting a check.
Those signs could include a missing check number, customer’s address, bank address, or routing number, or the check could lack an authorized signature.
“If a check is given to you and you have any questions or suspicions in your mind about the check, do not hesitate to contact the business the check is from or the bank the check was written on,” Lewis said.
No bond has been set for either suspect.
