VICKSBURG — Winning district might’ve taken an extra-inning effort from Cathedral High School, but in the form of a 6-3 win against St. Aloysius Wednesday night, the Green Wave mathematically secured the district title.

Quinton Logan got the start for the Green Wave on the mound, and after striking out six in the first three innings, Logan walked two batters and allowed a hit in the fourth. Logan called Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley to the mound for a visit.

“He was complaining about tenderness in his elbow,” Beesley said. “He actually said it was bothering him before the game, so we decided to put Sam Parker in there.”

St. Aloysius scored two runs in the fourth to go up 2-1 on the Green Wave, but Cathedral quickly rebounded and scored two runs in the fifth to go up 3-2. Parker limited the Flashes in the next two innings before St. Aloysius tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

Cathedral put base runners on in the top of the eighth and scored two runs on wild pitches before Andrew Beesley hit a sacrifice fly to give Cathedral a 6-3 lead.

Gabe Smith came out of the bullpen in the eighth, struck out a batter and recorded the save to give Cathedral the win and the district title.

“Both Gabe and Sam pitched really well out of the bullpen tonight,” Beesley said.

Andrew went 2-for-3 for the Green Wave, while Craig Bradley went 2-for-5. Smith recorded the only extra base hit for the Green Wave with a double.

Though the win gives Cathedral its first district title in three years, Beesley said his team has bigger goals down the road.

“We’re looking for a long run in the playoffs,” Beesley said.

Vidalia 10, Caldwell Parish 4

COLUMBIA — The Vidalia Vikings avenged a 9-7 heartbreaking loss to Caldwell Parish earlier this season in the form of a 10-4 victory on the road Wednesday night.

Chandler Grayson led the Vikings in the win with one of his best performances of the season, pitching all seven innings, striking out eight in the process and going 3-for-4 at the plate.

“Chandler had it going today,” Vidalia head coach Kale Davis said. “Whether it’s him (William) Handjis or (Cole) Cangemi, if we play defense behind them, we’ll be alright. We have some guys with some good stuff on this team.”

The Vikings racked up eight hits in the win, including doubles by Grayson and Landon Seyfarth.

With three more district games scheduled, Davis said he had a talk with his team before the game about finishing the season strong.

“We want to win these remaining district games, trying to continue to get better,” Davis said.
