CRYSTAL SPRINGS — The Franklin County High School Bulldogs finished their regular season in impressive fashion as they took care of the Crystal Springs High School Tigers 16-2 in five innings Monday afternoon.
Winning pitcher Thomas Slagle had a bunch of strikeouts on the mound before being pulled in the game, head coach Brent Calcote said. Slagle also had a double.
Will Moffitt hit a home run while DeMantre Collins belted two doubles and Graham Cowart had a double of his own.
Franklin County improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in MHSAA Division 7-3A. Even though the Bulldogs finished in a tie with Wesson with the same division record, the Cobras won the tiebreaker, giving them the division championship.
That means Franklin County will enter the Class 3A South State Playoffs as the division’s No. 2 seed and host McLaurin, the No. 3 seed from Division 6-3A, for Game 1 of this best-of-three first-round series at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Block 14, Northwood-Lena 2
JONESVILLE — Jacob Fannin pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 batters as the Block High School Bears needed just five innings to defeat the Northwood-Lena Gators 14-2 Monday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-1A game.
Fannin gave up two runs to Northwood-Lena in the top of the first inning, but the Gators were shut out the rest of the game. In his five innings of work, Fannin walked just two batters.
“Jacob had a rough first inning. But after that he settled down and shut them down,” Bears head coach Stevie McCarthy said.
And it did not take long for Block’s offense to overtake that early deficit. Trent Coldiron hit a two-run triple and Taylor Perron-Krause had an RBI double as the Bears scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first. They scored their final four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Both Coldiron and Perron-Krause went 2-for-3 to lead the Bears, who had eight total hits and took advantage of four Gators errors.
Block (10-12, 4-4) plays host to Logansport today at 4 p.m.
Buckeye 4, Vidalia 1
BUCKEYE, La. — The Vidalia High School Vikings’ playoff chances may have taken a big hit after they lost to the Buckeye High School Panthers 4-1 Monday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.
Vidalia broke a scoreless tie with Cole Cangemi’s run-scoring single in the top of the third inning, but the Vikings were unable to hold on to that lead, giving up the game-tying run in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Chandler Grayson was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on four hits, one walk and two hit batters to go with four strikeouts over four innings. He went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead a Vikings’ offense that produced just four hits.
Vidalia (13-5, 2-5) plays host to Marksville today at 5 p.m.
Cathedral (softball) 8,
Franklin County 0
MEADVILLE — Marty Lewis threw a no-hitter and struck out eight batters as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 8-0 Monday afternoon.
Lewis came close to throwing a perfect game, but she ended up walking two batters. And for a while, Cathedral needed her pitching and a solid defense because the Lady Green Wave had a hard time against Franklin County starting pitcher Emily Smith.
For the first four innings, neither team was able to get a run in. It was a good pitchers’ duel between Lewis and Smith. That was until Cathedral broke through for four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Green Wave added three runs in the top of the sixth and one more run in the top of the seventh. McKenzie Milligan went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and one run scored. Abby Brown was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored.
Smith ended up allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and just one walk in six innings.
Cathedral (12-10) plays at West Lincoln today at 6 p.m.
ACCS 3, Delta Charter 8
FERRIDAY — Delta Charter racked up eight runs on nine hits to defeat ACCS 8-3 Monday night.
Jania Burns got the win on the mound, while Ashleigh Williams drew the loss for ACCS.
Burns had a double and Darby Beach had a triple for Delta Charter, while Williams had a home run for ACCS. Beach was 3-for-4 on the night.
With the win, Delta Charter improved to 10-4 on the season.
