NATCHEZ — Pate Shirley and Reed White combined to hold Natchez High to just five hits and Craig Bradley had three extra-base hits as the Cathedral Green Wave defeated the Bulldogs 19-3 in six innings Tuesday afternoon at Chester Willis Field.

“We were glad to get another game in. We were scrambling to get a few games in this week,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “We’re trying to stay in rhythm to get ready for the second round of the (MHSAA Class 1A South State) playoffs.”

Shirley got the win after allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks in three solid innings. White came in and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

“They both threw well for us. It’s been a long time since they’ve been on the mound,” Beesley said. “They threw strikes and they got ahead in the count a lot. That’s what we needed from them.”

This game was pretty much over before it got started as Cathedral scored six runs in the top of the first inning. The Green Wave added two more runs in the top of the second inning and plated three more runs in the top of the third to go up 11-0 before Natchez High finally got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the third.

After the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 12-3 game, the Green Wave ended the game early with seven runs in the top of the fifth.

Bradley ended up going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Andrew Beesley went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Gabe Smith went 2-for-4, drove in one run and scored twice.

“He’s a streaky hitter. He’s hot right now and we hope we can keep him that way through the playoffs,” coach Beesley said about Bradley.

It was a tough outing for losing pitcher JaDarrius Ivory, who lasted just one inning and allowed six runs (only one earned) on two hits and one walk with one strikeout. Tranez Lyles came in and gave up eight runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks in three innings.

Chris Scott came in to pitch the top of the fifth and allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Both Ivory and Shavoke Herrington has a triple and one RBI while Lyles had a double and an RBI.
