MONTEREY — Tiffany Weeks hit a two-run home run during a four-run rally in the bottom of the second inning as the No. 14 seed Monterey Lady Wolves defeated the No. 19 seed Pitkin Lady Tigers 7-1 Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

“I thought we did a really good job. We were patient at the plate. We hit the ball hard,” Monterey head coach Cary Shively said.

After Monterey scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-all, the Lady Wolves took the lead for good in the bottom of the second. And it was Weeks’ two-run home run that really energized the home team.

“It was a big home run. We had already scored a couple of runs, so her home run stretched the lead to 5-1,” Shivley said. “It really got our team excited. She hit to dead centerfield.”

Winning pitcher Bailey Book pitched a complete game and gave up one run on three hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts.

“She did a good job. She threw the pitches that she needed to throw,” Shivley said. “We played good defense. We were focused on what we needed to do.”

Weeks went 3-for-4 while Jody Duncan was 2-for-3 with a double and Natlee Duncan was 2-for-4.

Monterey (12-11) will hit the road to take on No. 3 seed Weston in a second-round game at noon Saturday.

West Lincoln 7, Cathedral 2

BROOKHAVEN — West Lincoln’s Malori Hall held Cathedral to just four hits and she went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Lady Bears to a 7-2 win over the Lady Green Wave Tuesday afternoon.

Hall went the distance to pick up the win. She struck out four batters and walked just two. The defense behind her was just as strong as the Lady Bears did not commit a single error.

But the same could not be said for the Lady Green Wave, who struggled not only at the plate, but in the field as they committed three errors.

“We were very, very flat. Made too many errors. We didn’t play very smart ball tonight,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said.

After getting out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Cathedral saw its lead go away quickly as West Lincoln scored three runs in the bottom of the first. The Lady Bears scored one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-1 lead.

After the first inning, Hall did not give up a run until the top of the sixth inning. But the Lady Bears got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Addie Spring went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs batted in.

Losing pitcher Elizabeth Smith gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks with just one strikeout over six innings. She also went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Mackenzie Wats had a triple.

Cathedral (12-11) next plays at 5 p.m. Friday at home against Loyd Star.
