NATCHEZ — Thanks to a grant from My Brother’s Keeper — a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy living for underserved populations — two area parks will undergo renovations.

North Natchez Park and Jack Wait Neighborhood Park will each receive $45,000 through the grant.

Community Development Director James Johnston said the grant was approved last Thursday, and he expects funds to be deposited any day.

“The overall purpose of the improvements is to entice more people to use the parks, which will improve health and well being in Natchez,” Johnston said Tuesday at the regular aldermen meeting.

Through the grant, North Natchez Park, located on Triumph Lane, will receive resurface treatment to all basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. Park tables, benches and trash receptacles will also be refurbished.

Jack Wait Neighborhood Park on St. Catherine Street will receive renovations to their boardwalk, park benches, tables and trash receptacles as well.

Johnston said the city is also considering purchasing outdoor fitness and kiddie equipment for Jack Wait with the grant money.

“The best part is, this all comes at no cash cost to the city,” Johnston said.

Once funds are deposited, Johnston said the city’s public works department would immediately begin administering the improvements.

“This is all part of an effort to encourage healthier living in the community,” he said.

My Brother’s Keeper is a private, non-profit organization headquartered in Jackson. It was established in 1999 with the goal of enhancing the health and well being of minority and marginalized populations.
