MONTEREY — Jake Cooper pitched a complete-game shutout as the top-seeded Monterey High School Wolves defeated the 17th-seeded Avoyelles Public Charter School Vikings 8-0 Tuesday afternoon in the second round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.
Jake Barlow, Taylor McCaughey and Ashton Blank all had multiple hits in the game to lead Monterey at the plate. The Wolves were playing their first game in nearly two weeks, but it did not seem to bother them at all.
“I thought we played well,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “We came out early and scored two runs in the first inning. That seemed to settle us down.” The Wolves continued to add to their lead as the game went on.
“Jake had a great game today,” ichard said. “He struck out 10 and walked two. He was in command and we played good defense behind him. We had a couple of timely hits.”
Avoyelles Charter, which got such a surprisingly high seed despite entering the playoffs with a 7-14 overall record and a last-place finish in District 6-B at 1-5, was hoping to pull off another upset after winning at No. 16 seed and district foe Harrisonburg 5-0 last Thursday.
But Monterey, which has not lost a game in state since its season opener at Vidalia back in late February, made sure that would not happen.
“It’s tough to beat a district team three times (in one season). Avoyelles Charter is a tough team. They always give us trouble,” Richard said.
Monterey (18-2 counting its loss at Cathedral) will next play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at No. 9 seed Fairview in the quarterfinals.
