PURVIS — Garnering hits wasn’t a problem for the Cathedral Green Wave in a 7-5 loss to Sacred Heart Thursday night. It was getting hits in timely situations that cost the Green Wave Game 2 in a best-of-three MHSAA Class A playoff series, Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said.
“We didn’t run the bases well and we didn’t have any hits with runners in scoring position,” Beesley said. “We’re still not playing with any sense of urgency. We’re not playing with any emotion right now.”
Cathedral recorded 14 hits in the loss, and Quinton Logan led the team with four hits, including two home runs.
Cathedral took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before Sacred Heart scored two runs in the third inning to go up 3-2. The Crusaders added to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring three more to go up 6-2.
Sam Parker pitched six innings, giving up nine hits and five walks. The Green Wave committed two errors in the loss.
Matthew Gallardo picked up the win for Sacred Heart, pitching seven innings and striking out five.
Andrew Beesley went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Green Wave.
Following the loss, Beesley urged his team to show more enthusiasm in Game 3.
“I told (the team) this can go one or two ways — you can hang your head and feel sorry for yourself, or you can come out tomorrow and let it loose,” Beesley said.
Cathedral will host Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. tonight in a series-deciding contest.
Pate Shirley and Gabe Smith are expected to take the mound for the Green Wave.
“All hands are on deck,” Beesley said. “You could see a number of guys pitch.”
