NATCHEZ — Before Presley Martin and her 11- and 12-year-old teammates took the field Tuesday evening, Martin was telling jokes with her teammates huddled around her in the dugout.
“Wouldn’t it be funny if I threw a pitch and it went over that fence behind home plate?” Martin asked, laughing at the thought of it.
Her coach Amanda McGary quickly told Martin and her Guedon Farms’ teammates to take the field and warm up for an exhibition against Freeman’s Welding. Luckily for McGary, Martin didn’t jokingly toss it over the fence. Instead, she kept Freeman’s Welding scoreless in the first two innings, en route to a 12-7 victory. The win marked Guedon Farms’ sixth in a row.
“It’s enjoyable to watch as a coach,” McGary said. “The girls just came together as one after our first two losses.”
While Martin’s pitching and defense behind her was superb in the first two innings, it was the bats that allowed Guedon Farms to jump on their opponent. Martin led off the game with a single, before Presley Martin hit an RBI single, scoring Peterman. A 2-RBI single by Maggie Whitehead scored Madison Campbell and Martin to give Guedon Farms a 3-0 lead, but Guedon Farms was only getting started.
Abby Sistrunk stole home before a bases clearing unassisted out by Freeman Welding’s Kyra day ended the inning with Guedon Farms up 6-0.
Over the course of the next two innings, Guedon Farms added six more runs to their lead, leading Freeman’s Welding 12-0 heading into the bottom of the third. With time running out, Freeman’s Welding coach Mark Richardson urged his team to keep battling.
“Come on, girls, let’s get some runs here,” Richardson said. “You don’t want the score to end with us having zero.”
His team responded. After a leadoff walk by Harley Craft, Katelon Nettles singled. Craft stole home for the first run of the ballgame, and Amber Scroggins followed with a double to score Nettles. Scroggins then stole hom to make the score 12-3.
Day then stepped up to the plate and launched a double. Grace Richardson singled to put runners on the corners with no outs, and a passed ball scored Day to make the score 12-4. Carleigh Sproulls was the tenth batter to step to the plate, and after she hit a single, making the score 12-7, the game was called because the team batted around.
“Good job, girls,” said Richardson, proud his team didn’t throw in the towel.
