NATCHEZ — Natchez aldermen discussed Tuesday plans to construct a community swimming pool and possibly partner with the YMCA organization to operate the pool.
Natchez-Adams County Recreation Commission Chair Tate Hobdy let board members know that a letter of intent to partner with the YMCA in Jackson for pool, and other recreation services, has been signed by the Adams County Board of Supervisors, Natchez-Adams School District and the Natchez Board of Aldermen.
Now, Hobdy said the city and county need to meet with YMCA representatives to form an agreement for what that possible partnership would entail.
Hobdy said the first thing on the YMCA to-do list would be to construct a pool at Liberty Park with oversight from the YMCA.
“I’ve been talking with the YMCA, and they’re excited about this possibility,” Hobdy said. “They want to have their footprint here.”
In order to gauge what a city and county partnership with the YMCA would look like, Hobdy recommended the board meet with representatives from the YMCA chapter in Flowood.
Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said before the next board meeting, he would set up a meeting with representatives in Flowood to map out a possible YMCA plan.
Brown was quick to point out that no plans have been approved, and nothing is set in stone.
“There has been some discussion of the YMCA taking over all recreation management,” Brown said. “But with that comes a cost, which has never been discussed.”
Brown said his main concern with a YMCA partnership is finding funds in the city’s budget to support its various programs.
Aside from a YMCA partnership, Brown said he would like to see a community pool constructed before the city’s 300th birthday celebration in 2016.That pool, Brown said, could be built before a partnership with the YMCA is approved.
“It’s possible to get a pool before the tricentenntial, but probably not a YMCA agreement,” Brown said.
Other aldermen expressed high interest in a partnership, but said it needs to happen sooner rather than later.
“To me, sometimes you have to be aggressive,” said Alderwomen Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis. “And I think we need to be aggressive about this.”
The aldermen’s next meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m., June 9.
