NATCHEZ — Orianna Howell isn’t sure if her softball career is over just yet, but if it is, she went out on top.

Howell, a member of the United Mississippi Bank team and also a standout on the Natchez High School softball team, was awarded the Riana Flynn Memorial scholarship Monday afternoon at the closing ceremonies for the Natchez-Adams girl’s softball league.

“It means a lot to me because softball is what I love doing,” said Howell of receiving the award. “To get something like this, it helps me out in achieving my goals for the future.”

Howell essentially grew up in the league, playing as a child and then rejoining in 2008.

“This is where most of my friends are from,” she said. “Playing softball means so much because it is like my home away from home. When I’m stressed out, this is what I do.”

Howell said she has plenty of memories from her time on the field, but it was mainly just having fun that she’ll remember the most.

“It was great being with friends, winning games and spending time with everyone close to me,” she said. “It was just a lot of fun.”

Howell will be attending Southern University in the fall, and as for continuing to play, the decision is still in the air.

“I’ve thought about it, but I’m not sure if my shoulder is going to allow me to play any more after this,” she said. “We never know what the future holds, though.”

Howell said she is looking forward to college and beginning the next chapter of her life.

“I’m ready to get my degree and start my future,” she said. “My life is beginning now and I’m focusing on what the future has in store for me.”

Howell was the lone senior for the Lady Bulldogs this year and was one of the most recognizable faces in the park after her time in the league, and she said she hopes things continue to go the way they are.

“I’ve enjoyed playing with these people for such a long time,” she said. “Every year was something new, and a new experience, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m happy with who I played with and what I was able to do. I hope it stays the way it is.”

Howell is the daughter of Christy and Travis Hutchinson.
