We applaud supervisors for stepping up

Adams County Supervisors, by law, appoint two members of the Natchez-Adams School Board, but then are expected to simply keep their mouths shut.
Fortunately, a couple of our supervisors have more common sense than some of our systems of law.
While we appreciate that the system of appointing school board members is set up to try and get politics out of the process, at the moment, the district is virtually on lock down.
The school board is split on the direction of the district, and the superintendent, judging by his publicly seeking employment elsewhere, clearly is interested in getting the heck out of Natchez.
Despite Superintendent Frederick Hill’s hunt for another job, the school board voted to extend Hill’s contract.
That has raised the ire of many, including the county supervisors who are, unfortunately, handcuffed to their school board appointee.
As supervisors mull potential legal action against the district to either change their appointee or to overturn Hill’s contract extension, they’ve turned to a plea for a public dialog with the school board.
Supervisors have asked the school board to answer half a dozen or so questions in an effort to better understand the district’s policy.
We applaud supervisors for stepping up and trying to get information out of the district.
Shining a little sun onto the district’s practices and plans should help bring some much-needed dialog. We hope that the school board answers the questions posed promptly so the entire community can focus on the district’s real mission — educating our children.
