NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department received a call at 6:30 p.m. Monday for an armed robbery on D’Evereux Drive.
However, Natchez Lt. Craig Godbold said the department is unsure of the robbery’s context.
“A guy called in and said a woman made him believe he was coming to give a deposit on an apartment,” Godbold said. “When he got to the apartment, he said the woman took him around back, pulled a pistol on him, and stole his $200 deposit.”
Godbold said the caller allegedly met the woman on Instagram, a popular social media outlet, and inquired about an apartment.
“If it was a deposit, she could have just taken the money and not pulled a gun,” Godbold said.
Since the caller failed to come in for further questioning and there are no current suspects in the alleged robbery, Godbold said the department believes the caller might have been soliciting sex from the woman — not an apartment.
“In the report, it says he was supposed to meet her at 3 p.m.,” Godbold said. “Why did he wait until 6:30 p.m. to report the robbery? That’s the question that needs to be answered. We have nothing to show that this was a robbery.”
Godbold said the department is not releasing the name of the apartment complex for fear of tarnishing the complex’s reputation.
“We don’t know who this guy is, or who the suspect is,” Godbold said. “At this point, we’re just trying to find out what, if anything, happened.”
